What Body Shape Am I?

00227504

Most of you will know the classic body shapes; hourglass, rectangle, triangle and pear shaped. But how do you know what body shape you are? Determining which of the four categories you fall into is as simple as three measurements.

  1. Measure around your shoulders no more than three inches below the point. You might need a friend to help you with this.
  2. Measure around your waist.
  3. Measure around your hips, at the widest part.

Your body shape is determined by the relationship between the measurements.

TRIANGLE: Your shoulders are more than 5% larger than your hips.

PEAR SHAPED: You hips are more than 5% larger than your shoulders.

HOURGLASS: You shoulder and hip measurement are within 5% of each other and your waist is at least 25% less than the larger of the other two.

RECTANGLE: You shoulder and hip measurement are within 5% of each other and you waist is less than 25% less than the larger of the other two.

To calculate the percentage difference take the difference and divide by the largest measurement and multiply by 100. For instance if your shoulders are 38 inches, waist 30 inches and hips 40 inches then the difference between shoulders and hips is 2, divide by 40 times 100 or 5%. The difference between waist and hips is 10, divided by 40, times 100 equals 25%. Therefore the body shape is hourglass.

Body Shape Is More Than Just Proportion

Don’t get too caught up in working out the figures exactly, unless of course you want to, because these four basic categories are just a starting point. In his book The Science of Sexy Bradley Bayou, designer and stylist to the stars, gives 48 distinct body types. The archetypal four I’ve already discussed and then they are further categorized based on height and weight. Height is broken into three categories; petite (or short), medium and tall. Weight is broken into four categories; slender, average, full figured and plus sized. Each person will fit into these three categories; body proportion, height and weight.

Why go to so much trouble? There are different considerations for each body type. For instance if you’re petite then you’ll need to stay away from anything overly frilly or cluttered as it will have a tendency to make you look like a giant doll whereas if you’re slender design elements are a good idea as they can add interest to your frame.

Ummm…So What Body Shape Am I?

The thing to remember about these body shapes is that they have no meaning other than discussing clothes. They have no purpose other than to give generic examples of what is likely to fit and flatter a body with similar characteristics. You are the shape you are. If you’re anything like me it’s unlikely that you’ll fit exactly into any particular pigeon hole just because someone came up with a formula. This is why I’ve not given exact criteria for height and weight and the resulting category that puts you in, although Bayou goes into great detail in his book The Science of Sexy. I believe that this information is more a pointer if you like, saying ‘look in this direction’ and I don’t like to address such a complicated and emotional subject with such an analytical approach.

From the calculations above I am a pear shape, medium height, full figured women. But it turns out my breasts are so large that ain’t nobody looking at my shoulders so in other respects I’m an hourglass shape. It could all get very confusing were I not to keep in mind that these are simple guidelines and at the end of the day I buy the clothes and put the outfits together and so long as I end up feeling fabulous it doesn’t particularly matter if I stuck religiously to the outlines given.

So tell me, what body shape are you? And how do you feel about that?

About Lisa

I love clothes and in particular shoes but I'm just such a funky shape I find it hard to find stuff that works for me. I needed a little help and that led to my work on this blog. Turns out I love writing too, as well as helping people so I'm really onto a winner here!

I think we come in far too many shapes and sizes to be categorized into one shape only. It’s something I address in the next post “Have a Good Look At Your Naked Truth” – see the link under the last comment.

Basically dressing for your shape is about shapes. We break things into four distinct groups but that’s only a very simple guide and a way to say “if you’re this shape, don’t wear that”.

For instance I have big breasts, and I mean really big. It’s just lucky that my hips are so wide they manage to balance things out and make me an hourglass. But the thing is my shoulders are really small so from behind I’m basically a pear shape. That leaves me trying to pick out the things that work for hourglass and pears and add in that I’m a plus size … well, it’s all a bit of a challenge!

  • Dawn

Great website! I can never decide if I am a pear or an hourglass. Shoulders 35-36, bust 38, waist 29, hips 40. I am short (5 foot 3)and I have a short waist – I though pears were longer in the body? Very confused since all the ‘pear rules’ seem to be made for smaller breasts!

  • Kelsey

What’s your opinion on what shape(s) I may be?

    shoulders: 39″
    bust: 35″
    waist: 25″
    hips: 35″
    height: 5’9.5″

    P.S.
Other sites say to compare bust-waist-hips; therefore: hourglass. But adding in the shoulders; triangle. So, do you believe in being a combination of shapes or does one prevail? Thank you for your much anticipated analysis!

  • http://lisarutland.com Lisa Rutland

    Thanks for commenting Kelsey

By the definition in this post you’re a triangle. Our bodies are from the top of our head to the tip of our toes and we may be many, many different categories all the way down.

From my perspective – you’re pretty much hourglass shaped however you have broad shoulders. For an hourglass the idea is to emphasize the waist and play up the feminine curves but … your shoulders may throw that look off balance.

The whole idea is to look and feel fabulous about what you wear so you face your day with confidence. The idea of body shape is to give some generic advice about how best to achieve that.

    Just like I thought, I’m a rectangle:
    Shoulders: 37.5
    Bust: 37
    Waist: 30.25
    Hips: 37.5

I do have pretty strong shoulders, though, and I like my bustline. Still, I’m trying to consider how much weight/how many inches on my waist (like, 3) I would have to lose to get that coveted hourglass, or on my hips (like, 2.5) to get a triangle…

  • Inga

    Waist 29
    Hips 40
    Shoulders 40,2

Sounds like hourglass, but I always have difficulties finding clothes that fit me perfectly. My bust is quite big and I have a tiny waist it is hard to find a bra that fits aswell. 28k/30J. Anyone else with same problem.

  • http://lisarutland.com Lisa Rutland

I am right there with you Inga. I have about 8 bras that are very important to me because is so darn hard to find ones that fit.

My waist is also tiny and I find it incredibly difficult to wear a blouse or dress. If it fits my bust it swamps the rest of me and if it fits my waist then the bust looks like an overstuffed sausage.

My best tips are: Find a bra that fits and buy three – they will all last longer and nothing is better for finding clothes than getting your breasts properly supported.

Stick with tops rather than button up shirts and those with some lycra in them. Layer. Buy V-neck tops to break up your torso and create interest and wear them over a higher cut lighter color top to cover your clevage and avoid your breasts becoming the center of the outfit – unless that’s what you’re aiming for.

Always highlight your waist. Get a collection of cardigans rather than jackets. Experiment with belts.

Spend a little more on expensive items and get them tailored to fit.

My best advice: Get a bra that fits. Without that nothing else works.

    Shoulders: 34
    Waist: 22
    Hips: 30

People I know tell me I have a small frame and that I’m an hourglass. Is this true according to my measurements? I feel pretty skinny, but I need a second opinion. Thanks!

  • Natasha

    Erm..
    I was wondering what shape I was…
    Shoulders – 34.6 inches
    Waist – 29.9 inches
    Hips – 31.9 inches
Im 4 ft 9 and 7.5 stone, and a C cup if that helps

    Thanks in advance
    ? From Natasha

  • http://lisarutland.com Lisa Rutland

    @ Sarah and Natasha.

By the definition in this post you’re both triangles. This may or may not be any help to you; it depends why you felt moved to look.

The whole point of determining a body shape is for research and ideas only. Look at the suggestions for any body shape. Then try what works, and more importantly, what you like. You may break the rules of dressing for your shape everyday but if you like how your look and feel confident, the goal here, then what difference does it make.

  • Meka

I always thought I was an hour glass or even a ruler. But I’m not. I’am a pear! My shoulder is 42, waist 42,Bust 51,Hip 53.5.When I was being measured I came out to be an A shape because my hips where so much bigger than my shoulders. I’m a plus size women now a size 16-18. Even when I was a size 10 my brest were big. I have always had a big bossom and now that I’am in my late mid 20′s I have a big butt and thigh. oh yeah my thigh is 32. This is amazing to know that I’am a pear my bottom half has always been digger than my upper half with the exception of my bust. Thank you so much for this chart.

  • Stella

    Hiya lisa,

I was just wondering if you could tell me what body shape I am?

    Here are me measurements:

    Shoulders – 34.5 inches
    Waist – 24.5 inches
    Hips – 33.5 inches inches
    Height: 5 ft 4
    Weight:99 lbs exactly (weird, right?)
    Bra size: 30 C

    Thank you so much!
    =)

  • Jen

Please tell me what shape I am. My bust is a 33, my waist a 24, and my hips a 38. I am 5’4″ and 123 lbs.
    Thank you!!

  • http://lisarutland.com Lisa Rutland

    @Jen

You need to measure your shoulders to define your body shape.

My daughter and I look very similar from the front however she has much wider shoulders than me and it completely alters the way some outfits look.

I belive that it’s more important how you feel about your body anyway – see http://bodyshapestyle.com/2008/04/28/have-a-good-look-at-your-naked-truth/

I’d say you’re an hourglass. Choose styles that highlight your waist and play up your curves.

  • Laura

If you can help Lisa, totally confused here I dont know if I’m an hourglass or rectangle based on the information above and a height of 5ft 4.
    38 houlders,(35 bust),29 waist,36 hips.
Flat bottom, not much shape around the waist, so dont think an hourglass.
    Thanks
    Laura

  • Laura

When I look at the clothes for Rectangle and Hourglass very, very similar and could probably get away with both styles? By bust is a D cup I should have added.
    Thanks
    Laura

  • http://lisarutland.com Lisa Rutland

    Hi Laura

I think you’re missing the point of body shape. It’s to give you an indicator of what will be the best clothing to suit your shape. The calculation in this post is to show how body shapes are calculated. You’re correct that you’ll be either a rectangle or an hourglass. You’re on the borderline and could be either. People very rarely fit into one particular shape, rather having elements of two or more. And as you’ve noted already what works for a rectangle will work for an hourglass – mostly anyway.

  • jordan

    hey!

i am not doing this right at all… hahaha, i have no idea what body shape i am, im guessing pear shaped, or more hourglass i think, but im not sure, i just attempted to measure myself, not too convinced that i did well, lol it came out as 42/32/45…. im a 40DD, have a slim waist, and not gonna lie, i have a large butt… lol but im 5’8 and weigh 145…. do you know what id be?

  • http://lisarutland.com Lisa Rutland

    Hey Jordan,

You’re a pear shape with big boobs, same as me actually. Because of your breasts you need to utilise strategies for hourglass and becuase of your bottom you need to use strategies for pear shape.

Focus on feeling comfortable. To balance your bottom half opt for darker, plainer colors and patterns on the bottom half. Go for u shape and v neck tops that highlight your waist on the upper half.

    Thanks for commenting.

    Hi Lisa,

Please help me. I’m really confused as to what shape i am and i would love a new wardrobe as at the moment i’m living in jogging pants and t-shirts and have no clue what sort of styles suits me. My measurements are
    Shoulders 44
    Bust 44
    Waiste 34
    Hips 42
    Please help me.
    Thanks, Christine

  • http://lisarutland.com Lisa Rutland

    @ Aman

Your shoulders are wider than your hips so technically you’d be a triangle, however your waist is very slim so you are much like an hour glass as well.

    @ Christine

You are much the same as Aman – your top half is wider but not by much, so you’re a triangle, however your waist is so slim it is good idea to choose outfits that highlight.

    LISA

  • Aman

wow!! thanx so muchhh!! neva fort id b an hourglass!! :D

  • Laura

Okay thats great….thanks Lisa for your reply and advice. Terrific little website by the way and has given me a few fashion ideas.

I am 45 years old and since my hysterectomy my body is changing. At the moment, my measurements are:
    shoulders: 45
    breasts: 44
    waist:37
    hips:44

I’m guessing I’m a rectangle, but not sure. Thanks for the help.

  • http://lisarutland.com Lisa Rutland

Hey Alison, thanks for commenting. You are definitely a rectangle. Work on creating long lean lines with a definite waist.

  • Tracey

    Hi,

I have always been confused about my shape. I have just measured myself and I am…

    Shoulders: 37
    Bust: 35
    Waist: 27.5
    Hips: 35.5

I feel straight up and down most of the time without much shape at all!!

    Thanks

  • http://lisarutland.com Lisa Rutland

    Hi Tracey

I would say you are a triangle. Your shoulders are slightly wider than your hips so some things will tend to throw off your balance. But you also have some characteristics of a rectangle. Concentrate on creating a waist. And celebrate your shape. It’s who you are and it’s unlikely to change, so my advice is learn to really rock it.

  • angie

Hi, I’m 49 years old and I would like to know what shape I am. Ive always felt that I have a boyish figure but now that I’m older and working out I feel my body has changed. Due to haveing children my belly is a little loose so no matter what size I am I tend to have a little over hang (love handles)and I still have to shop in the jr. section for jeans I’m not really sure what size I am 3 jrs. o womens? anyway my measurements are
height – 5’7 long and lean
    weight – 127 lbs
    shoulders – 39
    chest- 36 between b and c
    waist 27 1/2
    hips 35

  • http://lisarutland.com Lisa Rutland

Hi Angie – I’d say you’re a triangle – your shoulders are the widest part of you. Concentrate on maintaining balance. Wear simply things on top and add volume on the lower half.

  • Kiriel

Hi! First off, this is an awesome site. I’m a bit confused about mine, because my tush is a bit larger than my bust. So everything I’ve read that was going based off bust-hip measurements says I’m a pear, but then I found your website. I’m 5’3, weigh about 128 pounds…my measurements are:

    shoulders: 38″
    bust: 33″
    waist: 26″
hips (measured around the largest part) 38.75″

So would I technically be an hourglass but still fit into the pear category? I hate shopping because I am totally in love with the 40′s styles but can’t do pencil skirts. grr! Actually, it’s just really hard finding things that fit because jeans don’t fit my tush and my waist. Plus I’m short so I have to hem everything and if I get fitted tops, they ride up.

    Kirie’l

  • Barbara

Reading everyone’s comments-here’s a challenge. My measurements are
    Height-5’1
    weight-130 lbs
    shoulders-37
    chest-34B
    Waist-31
    Hips-38
I have been told I’m a vase BUT I don’t have the large breasts. I’m finding it quite a challenge shopping for clothes as nothing looks right.
I would really appreciate some help!

  • BRIGID MURPHY

Hi love your site.Would like to know what shape my body is. Im 4I inches in Shoulders-Waist 30-Hips 36 and 5 foot 3 in height.

    many thanks
    Brigid

  • http://lisarutland.com Lisa Rutland

You definitely have an hourglass thing happening – you’re really very balanced. What is the issue you’re finding when you try on clothes? Look impartially at what looks off. Is it the top or the bottom? Does it make you look to short or too … whatever? These are the important things, not the shape. The idea of shapes is to give a guideline, but at the end of the day it’s a question of what is the problem you want to hide

  • gabby

    I am a 40 shoulders, 35 waist, and 38 hips, what am I oh and I wear 34 d bra and I am 5’10″
