Hi Folake

Sounds like a pear to me. The issues you're having with the fit are definitely pear issues. It sounds like you've got a good handle on your wardrobe though so no issues there.

Hi liza

I just want to clarify something which is am I a pear shape or not, I ve always had hips and more like a family thing as at the time I graudated frm high school my hips was 36. Now at 24 my stats is 32-26.5-38.5. I find it hard to get good gowns its either 2 fitted all over or its fitted at d lower half and big at d upper half most times I get my gowns sown for me. Same thing for either skirts or jeans the fittings are always perfect at the bottom and hips but a different story at the waist :(.

Hi Ruth

I agree, you don't visually look pear shaped. You look proportionate and seem to have more characteristics of an hourglass than anything.

A great and really helpful article, thanks. I've tried using websites which use bust/waist/hip measurements before and always come out as a pear shape, but it's clear looking at my overall shape that I'm either a bit top heavy because of my shoulders or vase/hourglass - I think, but feel like a brick (rounded stomach) until I catch sight of myself in a full length mirror and think maybe column!! I'm 32DD, 30" waist and 39" hips, but this photo http://www.flickr.com/x/t/0092009/photos/13640158@N03/7078168219/ might help? It's so confusing because measurements tell a different story to visuals!

Hi Leslie

Its likely that you are a combination. Most women are a combination of two or even three different types. Myself I'm a pear and hourglass combo, but then maybe I'm a cello. Its not important. What is important is finding clothes that work for you. So ... experiment and when you find something that works, great, and something that doesn't, just as great. Work with one and discard the other.

Im really confused about my body shape sometimes i think im an hourglass but then i think im a pear.

I have uneven ribcages they are pretty big and are notisable if i lose a few pound and i have a tiny waist and big hips but i have the skinniest legs ever and i have a medium sized butt im a size 5 in jeans and im 5'4 when my rib cage stops which is close to my hips my waist starts to form but is interrupted by my hips.. I have a normal sized bust i am a 34 B

My mother in comparison has really big thighs, my same size of bust and pretty much has little waist and not big hips but she has a flat but and the wight adds up inside her legs and by the sides

When i gain weight i notice my hands get flabby, mybust starts getting bigger and it goes prety much everywhere in my body mostly in my sides...

May i be in a combination of both a pear and hourglass?

Hi Lisa!

That's helpful. Thanks!

>You could be a skittle because your upper body and hips would lead to that
>but then you have that proportion going on.

It seems to me that I'm a skittle/hourglass hybrid. I don't have the shoulders to be a cello, I think - my arms and legs are proportional, too, though. If I were as small as Halle Berry (classic skittle), I think I'd look like an hourglass.

>A skittle will have lots of problems with finding pants / skirts that fit and will
>mostly feel their bottom half is standing out.

Skirts usually fit fine, but pants I have trouble with. Sometimes I feel bottom-heavy, but mostly from the side and not the front.

>An hourglass will feel like their waist is always swimming in fabric for
>some reason.

ALL THE TIME.

Hehe. I have to get clothing to fit my boobs and hips, then have it tailored to my waist.

Looks like I should follow a combination of skittle/hourglass tips. Thank you!

Hi Emily

You appear from the photo to hold more weight on your lower half than top, which is why the Pear classification; that happens more with pears than others. It's really hard to say from a photo, or from measurements. Thats why the definitions in the website because the person most qualified to judge is you.

Trinny & Susannah is different; It's not looking at measurements so much as the visuals of it. Looking visually, your hips and shoulders seem proportionate, you have (again from the photo) smaller breasts, a short waist and wide hips. You could be a skittle because your upper body and hips would lead to that but then you have that proportion going on.

The best way to tell is to think about the clothes you wear. A skittle will have lots of problems with finding pants / skirts that fit and will mostly feel their bottom half is standing out. An hourglass will feel like their waist is always swimming in fabric for some reason. A cello is likely to feel that her body is just odd and hard to find clothes for.

I'm sorry I can't be clearer, but that's because literaly we come in such a range of shapes in sizes that it really makes a mockery of even trying to define body shapes.

Hi, Lisa! I'm still confused.

When you say I'm a pear in the five-shapes classification, do you mean that by shoulder-hip ratio, I should be a pear? (And can you tell my shoulder circumference just by looking...?)

How, then, am I a proportionate shape like an hourglass/cello and not, say, a bottom-heavy shape like a skittle?

Or perhaps, is the bottom-heaviness subtle enough that with a few pounds weight loss it wouldn't be noticeable? I'd like to look as proportionate as possible, but I'm not really an unbiased party, and I want to be objective. :-)

Thanks so much!
