The 12 Shapes Of Trinny and Susannah

The more I learn about body shape the more resistant I am to actually defining a shape. One of the things that I, personally, have gained from writing this website is a greater measure of understanding of my own body and the shape that it is. How that translates into choosing clothing is still somewhat confusing and something I’m working my way through, actually as I write this website.

I do know that I don’t like the four categories I started off with. The issues with the use of the term pear basically highlighted the need for more appropriate classification. I want to further illustrate this point by examining the 12 shapes that Trinny and Susannah have identified – hourglass, cello, vase, bell, skittle, goblet, pear, lollipop, cornet, apple, column and brick.

The four categories I started with are hourglass, triangle, pear and rectangle. What shape you fall into is simple enough to define based on some simple measurements. These categories can be broken down even further into the types that Trinny and Susannah have identified.

UPDATE: Need some help finding your shape – take the Trinny and Susannah body shape quiz.

HOURGLASS = PROPORTIONATE

1. HOURGLASS – big tits, small waist, short waist, big hips, generous thighs

What really defines an hourglass is her tiny waist.

2. CELLO – big boobs, short waist, big hips, big bottom, big thighs, slim lower legs

A cello is an hourglass with a little extra around the middle which pretty much removes the tiny waist.

Ophrah WinfreyKirstie Alley

3. VASE - big tits, gently curving longer waist, hips equal tits, slim thighs and legs

A vase is sort of stretched out hourglass. A vase is very much defined by her height.

Kate WinsletGeena Davis

PEAR SHAPE = BIGGER ON BOTTOM

4. BELL – small shoulders, small tits, small waist, big thighs, big bottom

A bell’s breasts and waist are fairly similar size with all the extra on the bottom.

5. SKITTLE – average tits, slim waist, ok tummy, big thighs, chunky calves

A skittle has curvaceous thighs and bottom but is smaller on top.

Halle BerryMeryl Streep

6. PEAR – small tits, long waist, flat tummy, saddlebags, heavy legs

A pear is characterized by extra weight on the outer thighs.

Sandra Bullock

TRIANGLE – BIGGER ON TOP

7. LOLLIPOP – big tits, slight waist, slim hips, long legs

The majority of celebrities fall into this category.

Uma Thurman

8. CORNET – broad shoulders, small boobs, no waist, slim hips, long slim legs

Take away the big breasts and the shape becomes almost boyish.

Cameron DiazNaomi Campbell

9. GOBLET – broad shoulders, big boobs, no waist, narrow hips, long legs

And sometimes you’re just plain bigger on top.

Catherine Zeta Jones

RECTANGLE = EXTRA IN THE MIDDLE

10. APPLE – average tits, tummy bigger than tips, quiet flat bottom, OK legs

For this shape your stomach dictates how your dress, being the widest part.

Beth DittoKathy Bates

11. COLUMN – shoulder width the same as hips, slight waist, longer legs

A column is tall and has no waist rather than extra – like an, um, column.

Gwyneth PaltrowNicole Kidman

12. BRICK – Broad shoulders, no waist, average tummy, flat bum, chunky thighs, chunky calves

A shorter and wider version of the column, again with no waist.

Kim Cattrall

And there you have the 12 shapes of Trinny and Susannah. I think these definitions are more useful that the simple four simply because it begins to really breakdown the categories in each group.

So what category are you? I am a cello.

About Lisa

I love clothes and in particular shoes but I'm just such a funky shape I find it hard to find stuff that works for me. I needed a little help and that led to my work on this blog. Turns out I love writing too, as well as helping people so I'm really onto a winner here!

Thanks Lisa – this definitely helps.

    Hello!

Can a pear have big breast or a vase could have saddle bags?

I have big breast (D), small waist and big hips with saddlebags. I also have broad shoulder (maybe the same or just a bit smaller than my hips). I don’t know if I’m a pear or a vase.

  • http://lisarutland.com Lisa Rutland

Hi Ellie – Most certainly you can be a pear with big breasts – I’m very similar, but bigger in other places as well.

The key is to consider your whole body. For instance, when looked at from the back I’m very slender through the shoulders and have a tiny waist then big ole hips. From the front I look more like an hourglass because the size of my bust balances things out a bit.

The big thing to consider is what you want to reveal and what you want to conceal. It’s far more important that the actual shape.

  • Ania

I observes that there is a tendecy as far as hourglass is concerned. Most girls, that are think, or rather not overweight, and do not have babies yet, they ussually have small breasts, but broad shoulders. So when they measure shoulder-waist-hips ratio, they are hourglasses, but when they go breasts-waist-hips ration they think they are pears ( which they are not!).
I also observed that cellos tend to have smaller breasts and bigger thights that hourglas.

  • Krystal

I’m a vase! I thought I was a lollipop because I have big boobs and I always thought I was straight up and down with a big bust. I was measured and found out, I actually have hips! Not just any hips but my “hips equal tits” as Lisa put it. lol! All this time I thought I was ungainly and too busty for my body and surprisingly I’m proportionate… who woulda thought?!

    My measurements:
    chest: 38
    waist: 28
    hips: 38
    One more thing…
Do vases get love handles? I have them… so, would that make me another shape?

  • http://lisarutland.com Lisa Rutland

    Hi Krystal

I’m glad that you’ve found your niche. Unfortunately you’ll probably find that you could fit into more than one. We just come in so many varieties.

    LISA

  • Maria

When you’re judging your “hip,” what exactly is meant? The hip bone goes all the way up the side of the stomach, but when you measure your hips, you measure around the area where the legs meet the bum, kinda. Because that is the broadest part of the hips.

I’m 5’11″ and my hipbones are loooooooong and not very pretty since i get the extra bulge by going in and then out again where i shouldn’t.

I also have narrow shoulders and big upper arms, along with big tits and a narrow waist.

The problem, however, is the middle. In addition to my giant hipbones, i have a lot of stomach. Or rather, I have a very curved back that makes my stomach seem bigger because it sticks out more. I feel like my tits/waist ratio is my best feature, but to show that off it usually means showing off the stomach as well. Do you have any tips how to avoid that?

  • http://lisarutland.com Lisa Rutland

    Hi Maria

If you want to highlight your breasts and conceal your stomach then go for an empire waisted top / dress. An empire waist sits just underneath your breasts and then falls loosely from there basically hugging the breasts and skimming everything else.

Otherwise opt for more structured tops, like a stiff cotton blouse that’s going to skim your curves but not cling.

You’ve got the right idea – highlight what you like, minimise what your don’t.

    Thanks for commenting.

Ok i have been searching everyone to find out what shape i am, and i still havnt figured it out..

    Im 5ft 2″ 7.2 Stone and a size 6, my measurements are
    37″ shoulders
    29″ Bust
    27″ underbust
    23″ waist
    33″ hips
    28″ length on inner legs

pretty much i have broad but very skinny shoulders and small boobs and then a 10″ difference between my waist and hips.

If i cut off my body from the bottom of my boobs up i would be curvy but my broad shoulders and small boobs make me look skinny, like an inverted trianle but theres such a big differece between my waist and hips, im so confused..please help.

    Laura x

  • http://lisarutland.com Lisa Rutland

    Hey Laura

From your measurements you are an inverted triangle. In fact you’re an inverted triangle with curvy hips.

A lot of us will fit into more than one category. For instance I’m a pear shape, and traditionally pear shaped women have small breasts. But I have big breasts. In fact I look more like an hourglass. But then I have all the same struggles with finding clothes to fit my bottom half that all pear shaped women have. So I’m a pear shaped woman with big breasts. I take the things that work for pear shaped women and the things that work for big breasted women and try to find what works for me.

I think you’re going to be the same. Take the things that work for those with broad shoulders and the things that work for those with an hourglass shape and find out what works for you.

I think I’m a cross between Skittle & Pear … can this make sense?

How can I best dress to suit my ‘saddlebags’? And bottom?

    Anna

  • http://lisarutland.com Lisa Rutland

    Hi Anna

It’s totally possible to be a cross between two different shapes, although usually one more predominant than the other.

I’ve just done a post about what to wear for a pear here

    LISA

  • Kat

    Please help.
The more I look at these kinds of sites, the more confused I get. I just need someone to point me in the right direction to start with.
I am VERY short, both leg and body. My shoulders are broad, and my chest huge (I wear a G cup). Although my waist is OK, by tummy is big, and my thighs are even bigger.
I know I should wear skirts, but I just can’t stand them. Any suggestions?

  • http://lisarutland.com Lisa Rutland

    Hey Kat

With your top go for scoop neck or v-neck. Anything higher is just plain going to make it look like you swallowed a couple of melons. I’m also a G cup and you just need to get those babies out there. If you don’t like showing clevage go for layering. Higher neckline underneath with open neckline on top. I often do this with a tank top and then a button blouse over top, usually open to below my breasts because they can’t contain my rack anyway.

Play up your waist it’s your best feature. Go for knits, t-shirts anything that will mould your shape. It’s there and you just have to use it. Go for plain and let it sort of wrinkle up on your tummy as this will disguise any lumps and bumps. Jackets go for something that fits your waist and sits on the hip bone.

For pants go for wide leg to contain your thighs. Flat front always to disguise your stomach. Don’t get pants that have pockets on the hips – they will gape and make your hips look wider. Do get them slightly to long and wear with heels – it will make you look taller. If your lower half is smaller than upper half then darker on the back.

Choose sturdy heels and avoid stilletos. If you’re short then look for kitten (small) heels. It will give you height and still look ok.

Plain, plain, plain. Start with blocks of colour – eg a darker pair of pants with a coloured top, or vice versa if your top is bigger. As you get better at knowing what works for you then move into patterns.

Skirts, especially fitted around the middle and then to a fluted hem at knee line are good. Try a skirt, and / or a dress, with tights underneath. Not pantyhose actual footless tights. You may find it more comfortable and more you. Make the tights ankle length and a darker colour and pair them with a nice flat. It will look stylish and be comfortable.

Finally if you’re anything like me an empire waist will just flat out not work for you. An empire waist is a top / dress that sits just below your bust. Except they never expect anyone to have large breasts so the waist actually sits more like the nipple line. It’s not a good look. Avoid like the plague.

Must have – a decent fitting bra. Get your breast hiked up and looking good and it will make all the difference with your clothes.

Also – wear clothes that fit. That’s your shape. Find something you like and embrace it. Wearing baggy clothes makes you look bigger. Wearing tight clothes is just flat out uncomfortable. Basically, if you feel comfortable to start off with then whatever you’re wearing is likely to look better anyway because you’re relaxed.

  • Zara

    Hello!
I have a question about my body type. I always thought I was a pear, but now I heard about skittle and bell and I’m confused.
My measurements are: 35 – 26 – 37.5, I have strong, maybe chubby legs and my shoulders aren’t as wide as my hips. I gain weight at lower tummy, hips and upper tights. I have a little bit of saddlebags (at least I think so). My hips are the widest at lower part (that’s why I’m not sure about saddlebags).
What kind of pants/jeans should I wear to hide my hips?

    Thank you. :) )

  • Gabriela

I don’t think any of these fit me! :/
I have small shoulders, small boobs, small waist, but a short legs and big butt. My thighs are average they’re not big and my legs are not chunky. They’re average.

  • http://lisarutland.com Lisa Rutland

    Hey Gabriela

I don’t think everyone fits into these shapes at all. In my opinion it’s better to decide what parts of your body you like to showcase and which you like to hide and then opt for clothes that help with that ideal.

    LISA

  • http://lisarutland.com Lisa Rutland

    Hey Zara

If you have saddlebags, or think you do, then you’re a pear. Or at least you have some elements of a pear – enough to look at the tips and then pick and choose what works for your unique shape.

Wide leg, flat front pants are your best bet. They will elongate your legs which gives the impression that your legs are longer than they are and the wide leg will fit your thighs but confuse the eye as to where the widest part really is.

  • Joccoaa Ellice

oh my days im so confused :/

i’ve put in my measurements before somewhere on two sites. one came out as straight up and down and one came out as hourglass.

i’m generally a size 10 but having a 32E bust kinda doesnt let me find a good top so i have to go up to a twelve and look shapeless.

i want to know once and for all what shape i am, can you please help me?

    measurements:

    height: 5’6.5″
    bust: 35.5″
    waist: 28″
    hips: 35.5″

i dont have a very defined or large bum, but its not like an ironing board.

please help me with my shape, i get so confused. :/

also, can i wear skinny jeans with my shape? becuase they’re the only shape of jeans i wear. i refuse to wear any other shape ;)

    thankyou :)

    Joccoaa Ellice

  • http://lisarutland.com Lisa Rutland

    Hi Joccoaa

Let me ask you a question – what difference does it make? Will knowing what body shape you are make things suddenly easier? What if I told you the whole body shape “field” only came about to give people an idea of what items will suit them and what will not. It’s only an idea though. And it’s only for those who don’t have much of an idea of what suits them and what doesn’t.

On this site there are two definitions of body shape. Trinny and Susannah’s 12 shapes and another that goes from measurements (shoulder, waist and hips). I can’t answer your question and “categorise” you as I simply don’t have enough information for either definition.

Besides all that it seems to me your issue is finding tops that fit and flatter your top half. It’s an ongoing problem for women with big breasts, big breasts here being a category of large cup size. Work with fabrics that will give more drape and cling to outline your shape. Stay away from high necked tops, instead opening up your chest and throat to take the accent off your breasts. Play up other parts of your body, which you already do with your legs by wearing skinny jeans.

The only really concrete lesson that comes from knowing your body shape is that not every style of clothing is going to suit every woman. Find what works for you and stick with it.

    LISA

I’d suggest you know exactly what suits you and what doesn’t.

  • melissa

i dont think i fit in with any of those, i have broad sholders, big bum, big hips, small boobs, and chunky legs and thighs oh and a belly :( and i had a work party coming up and was hoping to get sum ideas of this but im now more confused

  • http://lisarutland.com Lisa Rutland

    Hey Melissa

How’s your waist? You’d be a Cello or a Brick pretty much, just with smaller breasts, depending on your waist.

Have a look at some of the ideas for bigger in the middle or hourglass.

I don’t really know which on i’m in. I have big boobs, y tummy kinda goes in a little, and then my hips are like even with my shoulders which are sort of broad, my thighs are kinda thick there not fat though. just about medium i guess. and my butt is kinda big then it gets smaller as it goes down. I’m 5’4 and i only weigh 122. which am i?

  • http://lisarutland.com Lisa Rutland

    Hey Caylie

How’s your waist – is it pronounced as in very in and out, or a long gentle slope? Or maybe it’s hardly there at all?

It it’s prounouced I’d say hourglass. Not much there at all Brick.

Can I be a small boobed cello? I have very broad shoulders (they’re nearly 40″ around), a small-ish chest (36b), a big but short tummy (34″) and round hips and bum(40″). My legs are pretty slim and probably my best feature and I’m 5’5.

  • http://lisarutland.com Lisa Rutland

    Hi CJ

I’d say you’re more of a goblet than a cello. A goblet has nice legs; a cello has bigger legs.

Hi I am confused as to which of the 12 categories I fall into as I am short (5ft1) with small, narrow shoulders and quite big breasts (36F), a smallish waist and hips but have a large, round tummy! My bum is about average and so are my thighs yet my calves and ankles are quite small. I struggle to find a dress that will fit nice as my top half is smaller than my middle. if it were not for my round belly I would prob be able to get into a size smaller! Please help me with my dilemma!xx

  • Hanne

I have narrow shoulders, a small and short waist, big breasts, big hips and long legs, who are a little bigger on top but it’s not very noticable. I also have saddle bags. Would I fall between an hourglass and a pear?

  • http://lisarutland.com Lisa Rutland

    Hey Lynette

You’re an apple. You’re stomach dictates how you dress.

Firstly, get a good bra – you have large breasts and this is essential. Second, dress wise, its actually probably going to be really hard to find a dress that works for you. Seperates will be a better idea. I have the same problem. Your best bets are dresses with empire waists or a fitted, ruched bodice with a flowing skirt underneath.

    LISA

  • http://lisarutland.com Lisa Rutland

    Hi Hanne,

If you have saddle bags usually you’re a pear. But yes, otherwise you sound much like an hourglass as well.

    LISA

  • http://starfirenz.livejournal.com Starfire

OK… I think I’m just weird :-) I think I’m *almost* hourglass, in that I’ve got broad shoulders (at least when I work out), D-cup, small waist, and wide hips. BUT I’m also disproportionately long-waisted and very short, thick, balloony-legged (seriously: standing up, I’m 5’3, my husband’s 6’0, but when we sit next to each other, there’s barely two inches difference in our heights)

Maybe I could create a subcategory of my own? Mutant hourglass perhaps? Dresswise, I tend to favour either long pants or flowy maxi skirts that “hide” my legs away (I’m working on that aspect of my body image, but the short legs mean pencil skirts won’t work for me), and wear tailored, fitted or stretchy tops that emphasise my curves from hip to waist. I don’t wear low or scoop necklines because I have a tat on my decollete that I don’t want to bare at work; but I find that high-necklines are fine, as long I’m wearing a block colour top, and I have a good quality, total-support bra on underneath (I often wear high-impact sports bras during the day because I just find them more comfortable!) I’m totally with Trinny and Susannah on not wearing flounces, frills or patterns on my top though!

  • beth

I dont know which I fit under if I actually do

    Shoulders- Broad
    Bust- 38E
Waist- not small but not slightly towards the larger side
    Hips- curvy
    Thighs- Quite big
    Calf- middle

  • http://lisarutland.com Lisa Rutland

    Hi Starfire

You seem to have a pretty good handle on what works for you and what doesn’t. I’d have a look at Vase as well as Hourglass and maybe Skittle and Cello as well because of the leg issues.

With your tops do you use layering? Layering a vneck over a higher neck gives the same illusion of opening up your chest at the same time as still giving you the skin coverage. Its something I use all the time because I have large breasts and don’t like to show lots of cleavage.

Re short legs: If wearing long pants and maxi skirts make you feel more comfortable what’s the issue? I say be comfortable. If you do want to try shorter skirts look for one that finishes just below your knees which is the narrowest part of your leg, possibly in an a-line or tulip shape. Pair it with heels that closely match your skin tone to make your legs look longer.

    Thanks for commenting,

  • http://lisarutland.com Lisa Rutland

    Hi Alexa

I’d say you’re a Cornet. The very worst thing you can do is try to cover up by wearing shapeless floaty clothing. You need definition in your clothes. Look for skinny leg jeans – you have the hips to pull them off flawlessly. Pair it with a nice top. Start slowly and experiment with what works for you. If you can get one outfit you really love then take the pieces from that and try mixing them with something else.

Also, you’re quite short so stay away from frills, bows and any sort of added bits and bobs. You’ll end up looking like little bo peep. Cigarette pants that highlight your legs and slender hips are a great idea. Pair with a boat neck striped shirt a la Audrey Hepburn. Instant classic.

    I hope that’s helpful.

    Hi Lisa!
    What’s my body shape? I have wide hips, here’s a pic: http://i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g427/mjau258/19.jpg

What should be the lenght of the skirt and what kind of shoes would work for me?

  • http://lisarutland.com Lisa Rutland

    Hi Nina

I’d say a pear shape – you have the long waist going on. Go for a knee length skirt, or possible full length. Look for straight heels in your shoes, preferably something a little chunkier. Straight boots are a great option.

I’ve never been sure what my body type is! I’m closest to the column in your descriptions, but I’m only a bit over 5’5″. I also somewhat fit the lollipop, but with a bit more waist and a smaller chest. I’m a 32B-24-35 with a flat tummy, very slim legs, and shoulders that are a bit broader than my hips but not enough to qualify me as a cornet. My hips only curve out a little bit from the upper hip to the lower hip, and I have a round butt that is a good size considering I’m quite skinny. I build lean muscle easily but I always have a “lanky” and not “bulky” shape – most people guess me at 2 or 3 inches taller than I am. I have long legs in proportion to my height and I haven’t ever been out of shape so I don’t know where the weight goes when I gain it, although I suspect it would go mainly to my hips because my stomach always stays pretty defined. Thanks for your help in advance :)

  • mel

To add one more thing, my upper thighs are less toned on the inner parts (although there isn’t any noticeable flab and they are still very slim) and my calves are quite skinny.

  • mel

Sorry I keep adding on, I just want to make the most detailed description possible so you can give me the most accurate shape …

I look curvier from the side than the front, because most of my hip measurement is from my butt. I have a slight thigh gap when I stand but not when I cross my legs. I wear a size 0-2, depending on the store, and my weight is around 110-115, but most people guess me at 100 because I have a lot of lean muscle.

I am comfortable wearing almost anything, and my figure works with basically all pieces of clothing. I just want to find out my body shape!

  • http://lisarutland.com Lisa Rutland

    Hey Mel

I’d say you’re a column. You do realise that knowing your body shape is just about choosing clothes? If you have no issue with what works for you what then do you want to know for?

    LISA

  • mel

I’m mainly just curious! I frequent some body-image based websites and it’s helpful to know what shape I am when I’m trying to describe my body. Thanks for your help!
