The 12 Shapes Of Trinny and Susannah

The more I learn about body shape the more resistant I am to actually defining a shape. One of the things that I, personally, have gained from writing this website is a greater measure of understanding of my own body and the shape that it is. How that translates into choosing clothing is still somewhat confusing and something I’m working my way through, actually as I write this website.

I do know that I don’t like the four categories I started off with. The issues with the use of the term pear basically highlighted the need for more appropriate classification. I want to further illustrate this point by examining the 12 shapes that Trinny and Susannah have identified – hourglass, cello, vase, bell, skittle, goblet, pear, lollipop, cornet, apple, column and brick.

The four categories I started with are hourglass, triangle, pear and rectangle. What shape you fall into is simple enough to define based on some simple measurements. These categories can be broken down even further into the types that Trinny and Susannah have identified.

UPDATE: Need some help finding your shape – take the Trinny and Susannah body shape quiz.

HOURGLASS = PROPORTIONATE

1. HOURGLASS – big tits, small waist, short waist, big hips, generous thighs

What really defines an hourglass is her tiny waist.

2. CELLO – big boobs, short waist, big hips, big bottom, big thighs, slim lower legs

A cello is an hourglass with a little extra around the middle which pretty much removes the tiny waist.

Ophrah WinfreyKirstie Alley

3. VASE - big tits, gently curving longer waist, hips equal tits, slim thighs and legs

A vase is sort of stretched out hourglass. A vase is very much defined by her height.

Kate WinsletGeena Davis

PEAR SHAPE = BIGGER ON BOTTOM

4. BELL – small shoulders, small tits, small waist, big thighs, big bottom

A bell’s breasts and waist are fairly similar size with all the extra on the bottom.

5. SKITTLE – average tits, slim waist, ok tummy, big thighs, chunky calves

A skittle has curvaceous thighs and bottom but is smaller on top.

Halle BerryMeryl Streep

6. PEAR – small tits, long waist, flat tummy, saddlebags, heavy legs

A pear is characterized by extra weight on the outer thighs.

Sandra Bullock

TRIANGLE – BIGGER ON TOP

7. LOLLIPOP – big tits, slight waist, slim hips, long legs

The majority of celebrities fall into this category.

Uma Thurman

8. CORNET – broad shoulders, small boobs, no waist, slim hips, long slim legs

Take away the big breasts and the shape becomes almost boyish.

Cameron DiazNaomi Campbell

9. GOBLET – broad shoulders, big boobs, no waist, narrow hips, long legs

And sometimes you’re just plain bigger on top.

Catherine Zeta Jones

RECTANGLE = EXTRA IN THE MIDDLE

10. APPLE – average tits, tummy bigger than tips, quiet flat bottom, OK legs

For this shape your stomach dictates how your dress, being the widest part.

Beth DittoKathy Bates

11. COLUMN – shoulder width the same as hips, slight waist, longer legs

A column is tall and has no waist rather than extra – like an, um, column.

Gwyneth PaltrowNicole Kidman

12. BRICK – Broad shoulders, no waist, average tummy, flat bum, chunky thighs, chunky calves

A shorter and wider version of the column, again with no waist.

Kim Cattrall

And there you have the 12 shapes of Trinny and Susannah. I think these definitions are more useful that the simple four simply because it begins to really breakdown the categories in each group.

So what category are you? I am a cello.

I love clothes and in particular shoes but I'm just such a funky shape I find it hard to find stuff that works for me. I needed a little help and that led to my work on this blog. Turns out I love writing too, as well as helping people so I'm really onto a winner here!

    Hey Lisa,

I have broad shoulders, big breasts, big hips, long slender thighs and legs, shoulders and hips are almosts same lenght, or same length , i do carry fat in belly, but definetly not my legs and thigs, what am i. ohand if flatten my belly i think i look good

  • Beth

    Hi Lisa,

I’m wondering if you can help me, I’m struggling to work out which of the categories I fit into. My legs are much longer than my torso, and my hips are slim by comparison with my ribcage (my waste doesn’t go in very much at all) but I think I look wide from the front nonetheless. That might just be my perception, I’m a British size 8 (so US4 I think) so I’m not large, but I think that I am perhaps more wide front-on than an average 8 and less wide from the side. I don’t know if this is relevant though…? It just seems to be the chief characteristic, but maybe it’s just my chief hang-up. Apart from that, I carry weight mainly around my upper arms and back (if I don’t exercise regularly I get little folds of flab on each side a few inches below my bra strap) and my upper arms. I think this is really odd, considering I could probably do with a little extra fat elsewhere- my lower arms and hands are really bony (the word “anorexic” has been used about them, idiotically, mainly by drunken men) and my hip bones are more protuberant than most women’s. As for my shoulders, I suppose they are relatively broad, by comparison with a pear-shaped lady’s, but they’re not swimmer’s shoulders by any means. And my boobs I would say are about average, though that may be because of the pill, without that they’d probably be just plain small!

    Sorry for writing so much!

    Best wishes,

    Beth

    I’d say a Vase.

The larger upper body and smaller lower body are characteristic of a Goblet. It’s hard to get an idea from just a description, but also have a look at Cornet to get more ideas.

    Hope that’s helpful.

    Oh Lisa,

Do youbeleive body shape has anything to do with feritlity

  • http://lisarutland.com Lisa

    Hi Soraya

I don’t believe there is any impact on fertility as a result of body shape.

Body size is a different matter – the very underweight have many issues with fertility. Being overweight seems to be a plus rather than a minus although, as with all things, the far end of the scale, the morbidly obese, can also have trouble.

    LISA

  • Soraya

Yes I was askingyou this because in many culture apprantley women with big breasts, hips, butt, and thighs are considered, fertlie with narrowerwaists, i read this somewhere.

  • Soraya

if you think about it some body shapes are said to be more attractive than others, and attractivness ismostly do with exhibiting fertility

  • http://lisarutland.com Lisa

    Hey Soraya

I think attractiveness is completely subjective and not a particularly good judgement of fertility, or in fact anything for that matter.

Its the same with body shape. It’s completely subjective as well, and has no particular use at all other than choosing clothes. Other than that it’s a waste of time and actually quite harmful. Thats my opinion anyway which is kind of ironic really since thats what this site is about.

People take it far to seriously. Your body shape is your body shape and it’s neither good or bad or fertile or infertile or healthy or unhealthy or anything other than your body shape. And that person over there with a different shape is not better or worse or healthier or anything other than a different shape.

    What shape are you Lisa?.

  • http://lisarutland.com Lisa

    Hey Donna

In the normal four shapes I am a Pear, with big breasts. In Trinny and Susannah shapes I’m a Cello. My shoulders are narrow and my hips are wide. I just happened to have big breasts as well which tends to make me look more like an hourglass, but not so much.

    What about you?

  • Nach

I am wondering about my figure because shopping is a nightmare on the High street, and I’ve grown to hate the H&M, Next and other sort for their poor tailoring (according to me :p).

Measurements are 36B-30-40.5 inch on a 5″3 height body and 62kgs. I am extremely short-waisted and have these large shoulders and large hips, with full thighs and slim legs. I recently lost weight (3kgs) and found out I lost 1inch on bust, 1 inch on waist and 1.5inch on hips (I used to be 39-31-42), the rest was drained out of my face, arms and thighs, but the back of my upper arms are nightmarish because no matter how much toning exercise I do, they remain jiggly!! (ok, not fat, but you can feel the loose flesh there).

Any idea what kind of clothes would suit me? I am in between size 10 and 12, but tight stuffs just don’t work for me, as I don’t look THAT slender at all… (too round hips and thighs!).

    Thanks for helping!

  • Nach

Oh, I forgot to say that It is all UK size… :p

  • http://lisarutland.com Lisa

    Hey Nach

You seem to have an Hourglass thing going on, though your breasts are not that large. The short waist will really make things difficult for you every time. You do need to work with your waist and accomodate it first and foremost. Fitted is better for you. In tops think knit tops. With jackets think fitted through the waist, hitting on your hip. Avoid anything too long as it will just make your upper half look like a great big brick. Find pants / skirts that work with your hips but don’t swamp your waist – mid to low rise is always going to be better.

Find the cuts of clothing that work for you. You don’t mention what sort of style you like so look for some inspiration of outfits you like and then find ways to copy them in cuts of clothing that will work for you.

  • Chelsea

    Hey Lisa,

I’m a weird in between kind of shape and I’m not 100% sure which shape I fit into! I have broad shoulders, smallish bust, tiny waist, and broad hips and thighs. Does this make me an hourglass (given that my shoulders are about the same measurements as my hips and thighs)? Or am I a variation of a pear? Thank you!

  • Sarina

My body fits almost perfectly into the hourglass-category; appart from my breasts. They are rather small. Am I still an hourglass-shape?

  • http://lisarutland.com Lisa

    Hi Chelsea

I agree an Hourglass, or possibly a Pear with broad shoulders. See how exact this is? Which is to say not at all. Often women will find that they’re a mix of two, or even three shapes. Have a look at the clothing options and see what works best for you.

    LISA

  • http://lisarutland.com Lisa

    Hi Sarina

Unless you think there’s another category that would work better for you, yes you’re still an Hourglass.

    LISA

  • Nach

    Hi Lisa,

Thank you for your guidance. I do agree that long tops that are shapeless make me look so large/wide at the middle, it’s unbelievable.
I have tried to find fitted jackets, but the waist is never there, or if the waist is there, the shoulder and chest do not fit “in” -_-.

I was referred to tailoring once, but it is just not sustainable, money wise.
The thing is, because my shape is quite dramatic and I am short, finding clothes fitting EXACTLY where needed is hard (I am always lowering the crotch of my trousers, and low/mid rise trousers can’t accomodate my upper thighs/bum…). So I never really bothered my waist, otherwise it is an extra frustration…

I like classy/formal style with good cuts, which I can find in foreign shops (I got most of my clothes while travelling to France, holland, belgium, Spain), but not in UK high street. So I think I will just stick to shopping abroad…
(a bit expensive, but worth in the long run…)

  • http://lisarutland.com Lisa

    Hey Nach

I’m an odd shape too, with big hips and small waist and it is always an issue to find clothes that work for me. Its a bit unfair but those of us with odd shapes just need to keep shopping all the time. Try, try, try is the key because only about one thing in ten or even 20 is going to work.

With the tailoring it’s best to stick with tailoring only foundation pieces, like a great jacket, a fantastic fitting pair of pants and a nice suit. Other than that you just need to get lucky.

I’ve been getting into internet shopping of late and I’ve had some successes and some failures. It’s a real issue for me being in Australia since shipping is such a big factor, but that said, I’m going to continue looking since there’s simply more to choose from. I envy you being able to go to Europe to shop!

    Hey Lisa
My boyfreind doesnt like the way i look, he says my hips and thighs are too fat for him, I know i am a pear, do you think I can change mybody shape to ass some fat into the bust, for an hourglass figure, my bf admires??

  • Jerry, Ian, and Alex

I think I found the shapes the men belong to

    1. Upward Rectangle: Shoulders same lenght as whole of upper torso, but narrower than height of uppper torso

    2. Sideways Rectangle: Same as above, but wider than longer.

    3. Tube: Same width and lenght ofupper tors, butskinny

4.Inverted triangle: (desired shape euivalent to women’s hourglass for men) Very broad shoulders narrowing torso ending with the narrowest hips.

    5. Apple: (a catogory shared by both women and men have in common) Just moreexcessive middle waist

6.Pear: (Another catogory shared by both men and women) Hey we know guys who store more fat in thighs and butts than anywhere else in their body too. There are such things as male belly dancers you know :P

What do you think Lisa, itshalf of the number of shapes women come in. Does this make us the new Trinny and Sussanah for men? please let us know

  • Jerry, Ian, and Alex

oh another one square widht and the lenghtof torso is same, just wider than tube

  • http://lisarutland.com Lisa

    Hi Alisha

It is possible to change your shape, but probably not to drastically. It’s kind of a genetic thing. You can tone up though and maybe change a little that way.

I recently lost a lot of weight, but these are my measurements 36/38/53 I know I am a pear shape, but I am confused as to which category I fit in.

  • Chris

    Hi Lisa,

I’m having trouble figuring out my shape. I’m 5’3. My shoulders are the same width as my hips, but I have bust-waist-hip measurements of 33.5 (bras 28DD)-24-35. I have a round, perky butt but my thighs are slim and I have thin calves/ankles. I’m small boned, weigh about 95lbs, and am basically thin except for the noticeable boobs, hips, and butt. I look best in form fitted clothes like pencil skirts, sheath dresses, tight jeans and sweaters, because in loose clothes you can’t see my shape and I look 12: ) Based on my measurments, I was going to say pear, except my shoulders are broad rather than narrower than my hips, and I don’t really look “smaller” on top than on bottom. Most people say I look very proportionate, but idk what that means for shape..

    Thanks!

  • http://lisarutland.com Lisa

    Hi Barabara

Your measurements don’t tell me a whole lot. You could be a skillet, pear or bell. It depends on the rest of your body. In the other definition I talk about here measure around your shoulders and see how much difference that makes.

    LISA

  • http://lisarutland.com Lisa

    Hi Chris

I don’t understand why everyone keeps giving me their bust-waist-hip measurements because they mean nothing to me. Look at the relationship between your hips and shoulders, which in your case is proportionate. Then depending on your waist, whether it’s long or short, there or not there will tell you the rest of what you want to know.

You’re most likely an hourglass or in Trinny and Susannah shapes a Vase.

  • Madi

    Hey,
I just measured myself and I don’t know if I am a cello or an hourglass.
    Bust: 36 waist: 25 hips:36
I have thick thighs, large breasts, and wide hips and I’m also pretty muscular throughout my entire body, if that helps.
My legs are also kind of short, and that makes jean shopping hell.
I wish I had more of a boyish shape! It would make everything so much easier for me.

  • http://lisarutland.com Lisa

    Hi Madi

The measurements don’t really help all that much. You could be an hourglass or a cello. The clothing options for either are similar.

  • Ophelie

Hi, I was hoping you could help me to determine my body type as I really have no clue. My shoulders are broader than my hips and my ribs/upper back/stomach have very little fat on them. I have long legs that are somewhat muscular and have the most fat on my inner thighs, some on my outer thighs and some on the high hip/lower back area. I have moderate waist definition and am neither long- nor short-waisted. Thanks so much. I love this site by the way.

  • http://lisarutland.com Lisa

    Hi Ophelie

    I’d say a Cornet.

    LISA

  • Joy

    Hi Lisa,

I have such a hard time finding clothes that fit well and flatter my body. I would LOVE your input if you have the time.

I’m 5’8″, my shoulders are about an inch larger than my bust and hips, and the latter two are exactly equal. I have a fairly short waist– when I measure from my armpit to my natural waist, and from my waist to the bottom of my bum (as recommended from another website), the latter measurement is 4.5″ longer than the former. I have long, shapely legs– no saddlebags whatsoever, the thickest part of my legs is definitely right below my bum.

My waist is ~8.5″ – 9″ smaller than my hips/ bust, but it doesn’t look amazingly tiny. While my waist is relatively small, I do have a little bit of a tummy (woe is me, right? haha). I look relatively curvy, but in no way as voluptuous or fabulous as Marylin Monroe.

I know you don’t like for people to give you their measurements, but I’m going to do it anyways, just in case you want a wee bit more information. Bra: 36C; Shoulders: 39.5″, Bust: 38.5″, Waist: 29.5″, Hips: 38.5″.

    Thank you!

PS. Sorry for the rambling, I just wanted to give you as much info as possible so you could get a decent idea about my body.

  • http://lisarutland.com Lisa

    Hi Joy

Looking at this logically you’re relatively proportionate and you have a definite waist. So that excludes quite a lot of shapes. The best fit is going to be hourglass I think or maybe a vase since you have those long shapely legs.

Do you feel that your breasts attract a lot of attention? Do you sometimes feel that clothes seem really baggy in the middle? All definite problems for vase and hourglass.

    What do you think?

And sorry if I don’t get back to you quickly – I’m moving house at the moment and things are chaotic.

    LISA

I am not sure what shape I am. Can you please help?

    S-47 inches
    B-42 inches
    W-45 inches
    H-47 inches

    I am a plus size woman. I wear a 14W and sometimes a 16W.

  • Kristen Swinton

I think there’s no name for my shape. I have large breasts, narrow shoulders and hips, slightly round tummy (from having twins), average waist, generous booty, and very curvy thighs and calves. What on earth am I??

  • http://lisarutland.com Lisa

    Hi Dee

I’d say a brick leaning towards an apple.

    LISA

  • http://lisarutland.com Lisa

    Hi Kristen

    Yeah, thats really …. um.

    I’d say a skittle.

    Lisa

  • Kristen Swinton

Thanks for the quick reply, Lisa! I thought skittle was kind of close, but I war a 36DD bra which is FAR from average. Of course, that shouldn’t affect my ability to wear jeans.

The only jeans that consistently look good on me are trouser-style. I’ve found that lately even “curvy” jeans are too narrow in the thighs! If they’re not too narrow in the thighs, the gape way out in the back. So frustrating!

  • Joy

    Hi Lisa,

Sorry for the late reply. For a very long time, my breasts were major attention grabbers (low cut tops certainly don’t hurt!). However, In the past year or so, I’ve lost a significant amount of weight (77 lbs!) and my breasts have decided to shed some of their extra weight too. =( They still elicit some attention, but certainly not to the same level as before.

Clothes are definitely hard to find, mostly due to the bagginess at my waist. I’ve found that the only coats that actually look decent on me are ones that are belted at the waist. All others just hang from my boobs and make me look extremely boxy. Shirts are also hard to deal with. I love button ups for the most part.. they look great when they accent my waist, but sometimes I can’t button the top button! (And that is precisely why safety pins were invented, right? haha). If I go for knit tops, I always have to go down to the smallest size I can fit into in order to ensure that they don’t just hang from my boobs. If they do that (and most do), they make me look shapeless and much larger than I actually am.

I need your opinion about something else too… I’ve tried to find info online about dressing women with short waists and nearly every single article recommends wearing longer tops. Well, when I do this, it makes me look frumpy. Do you think it’s unflattering or unattractive for women with short and (relatively) thin waists to wear tops that hit at or slightly above the hips? The articles always say that tops like that make short- waisted women appear disproportionate, but I like making my legs look super long. Plus, longer tops do not flatter my curves. What do you think? Do you think that shorter tops (not crop tops) look bad on girls with my figure?

Thank you so incredibly much for your help! I really appreciate it. Finding clothes is usually quite a pain in the bum.

  • http://lisarutland.com Lisa

    Hi Joy

Sorry it’s taken so long to get back to you. I’ve been moving house and things are in chaos.

I agree with you regarding short waists and long tops. I have a short waist, and I also have short legs. If I wear a long top my legs look shorter and I look wider; not a good thing! But, then like you, I also have curves.

I think its a individual thing. If you’re slender and have a short waist, then yes, a longer top is going to make you look more proportionate. If you have curves though, your first and foremost thing is to deal with the curves. And that means avoiding anything that’s going to make you look boxy. Ironically boxy only really works on people who are boxy.

The problem with longer tops and curves is that it disguises the curves and you look like you’re wearing a sack. To highlight a small waist, and usually wider hips, a top that hits on the hipbone is best. You must highlight your waist, or, as you’ve described above, you look like a big box.

  • Jenny

    Hi!

You are probably getting sick of the question “which body type am I?” but I just have to try to be certain! :-)

I have small breast, not so much waist and my hips and shoulders are about the same from a frontal view. I have somewhat long slim legs and arms – but I do have a butt. I am also quite tall. My bones are on the broader site and I can never wear the smallest sizes no matter how skinny I am. (if you understand)

Am I a coloumn or does the butt get me in another category?
