The First Rule Of Style: Fit

My boot wish

I have fat thighs. In fact my whole leg is pretty chunky, although I do have fairly defined ankles. When I was younger it used to upset me tremendously but nowadays I think, ngh, so what. That’s who I am and it’s far more beneficial to accept myself as I than it is to stress about my legs.

That said, I want boots. I love boots, they’re just so … booty. They’re classy and they’re fun and they look damn comfortable. But, I have never, ever owned a pair of knee boots in my entire life. My calves are just too damn big.

Well it turns out that Australia is backwards when it comes to clothing and in particular shoes because of course you can buy wide fitting shoes and boots. Which is not to say we couldn’t always get wide fitting shoes here, but that they were usually ugly and hideously expensive options from the podiatrist. Actual fashion shoes in wide fitting sizes with reasonable prices was something unheard of.

And to a certain extent they’re only available in very limited amounts now. But not to worry; I found wide fit women’s shoes from Viva La Diva and now I’m going to have a pair of boots. It’s very exciting.

FIT IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN SIZE

There are five simple rules when it comes to choosing clothes: fit, fabric, colour and pattern, detail and flourish and proportion.

Fit refers to buying clothes and shoes that actually fit your size and body shape. It’s a simple concept; of course if your clothes fit they will look better than if they’re too big or too small. They have more chance of showcasing your body that way. And that is the rub. At least for me. In the past what I wanted was to cover up, not showcase my body. Good grief. Such an alien thought.

It never occurred to me, wrapped in my self-hatred as I was, that wearing clothes that are too big really just made me look even bigger, and wearing clothes that were too small really made me look even bigger. It wasn’t until I started researching for this website that I realised how important it is to dress to your actual size.

Simply put, you can’t look stylish unless you wear clothes that fit. And the big bonus: SOOO much more comfortable.

For those like me who’re plus sized it can be a bit of an issue to find what you need but do persist. More and more options are coming online all the time. It is possible to have clothes that fit. Even boots, which is just too exciting for words.

About Lisa

I love clothes and in particular shoes but I'm just such a funky shape I find it hard to find stuff that works for me. I needed a little help and that led to my work on this blog. Turns out I love writing too, as well as helping people so I'm really onto a winner here!

  1. [...] The first rule of style is fit: you cannot be stylish is if your clothes don’t fit, whatever your size. And more important than that, regardless of your size or shape you deserve to wear clothes that are comfortable. I’m not a person who subscribes to the whole “you’re fat, oh my god, cover it up” view. It’s not your duty to cover up. It’s your duty to be happy and treat yourself as the worthy, wonderful person you are. [...]
