What Body Shape Am I?

00227504

Most of you will know the classic body shapes; hourglass, rectangle, triangle and pear shaped. But how do you know what body shape you are? Determining which of the four categories you fall into is as simple as three measurements.

  1. Measure around your shoulders no more than three inches below the point. You might need a friend to help you with this.
  2. Measure around your waist.
  3. Measure around your hips, at the widest part.

Your body shape is determined by the relationship between the measurements.

TRIANGLE: Your shoulders are more than 5% larger than your hips.

PEAR SHAPED: You hips are more than 5% larger than your shoulders.

HOURGLASS: You shoulder and hip measurement are within 5% of each other and your waist is at least 25% less than the larger of the other two.

RECTANGLE: You shoulder and hip measurement are within 5% of each other and you waist is less than 25% less than the larger of the other two.

To calculate the percentage difference take the difference and divide by the largest measurement and multiply by 100. For instance if your shoulders are 38 inches, waist 30 inches and hips 40 inches then the difference between shoulders and hips is 2, divide by 40 times 100 or 5%. The difference between waist and hips is 10, divided by 40, times 100 equals 25%. Therefore the body shape is hourglass.

Body Shape Is More Than Just Proportion

Don’t get too caught up in working out the figures exactly, unless of course you want to, because these four basic categories are just a starting point. In his book The Science of Sexy Bradley Bayou, designer and stylist to the stars, gives 48 distinct body types. The archetypal four I’ve already discussed and then they are further categorized based on height and weight. Height is broken into three categories; petite (or short), medium and tall. Weight is broken into four categories; slender, average, full figured and plus sized. Each person will fit into these three categories; body proportion, height and weight.

Why go to so much trouble? There are different considerations for each body type. For instance if you’re petite then you’ll need to stay away from anything overly frilly or cluttered as it will have a tendency to make you look like a giant doll whereas if you’re slender design elements are a good idea as they can add interest to your frame.

Ummm…So What Body Shape Am I?

The thing to remember about these body shapes is that they have no meaning other than discussing clothes. They have no purpose other than to give generic examples of what is likely to fit and flatter a body with similar characteristics. You are the shape you are. If you’re anything like me it’s unlikely that you’ll fit exactly into any particular pigeon hole just because someone came up with a formula. This is why I’ve not given exact criteria for height and weight and the resulting category that puts you in, although Bayou goes into great detail in his book The Science of Sexy. I believe that this information is more a pointer if you like, saying ‘look in this direction’ and I don’t like to address such a complicated and emotional subject with such an analytical approach.

From the calculations above I am a pear shape, medium height, full figured women. But it turns out my breasts are so large that ain’t nobody looking at my shoulders so in other respects I’m an hourglass shape. It could all get very confusing were I not to keep in mind that these are simple guidelines and at the end of the day I buy the clothes and put the outfits together and so long as I end up feeling fabulous it doesn’t particularly matter if I stuck religiously to the outlines given.

So tell me, what body shape are you? And how do you feel about that?

I’m an hourglass, but at the same time can be a pear, however way, I love it. My measurementes are 37 (shoulders), 27-37.5(hips). Also when I gain weight, it doesn’t fall only on my hips and bottom, but also on my chest and upper body, thus mantaining a smaller waist.

  • http://lisarutland.com Lisa Rutland

Its awesome to hear from someone who enjoys their shape. I think there’s nothing as sexy as a confident women so thanks for sharing.

heya i dont know what body shape i am my waist is 28 inches my hips are 33inches n my shoulders are 43 inches. Im pretty even in places but have a big bum but i dont think im really a pear because overall my legs arent that big! i have small boobs and toned tummy..i dont really think i have a waist to be honest! k wel please help me!thnx

  • http://lisarutland.com Lisa Rutland

    Hi Bella

You’re bigger on top or an inverted triangle – think Rene Zellweger. As your shoulders are your widest part this is the area you need to de-emphasize to achieve balance. The easiest way to do this is by emphasizing your slender legs and bottom, basically distract the eye.

In reality what’s more important is how you feel about your body. You may love your shoulders and want to emphasize them and, if that is what makes you feel sexy and confident, that is what you should do.

  • CC

    Hey,
please can you help me im not sure what shape i am, my shoulders are 39inches my waist is 27inches and my hips 35inches so it would seem im an hour glass but i have a large bum and smaller chest so am i hourglass or pear… or am i completely wrong lol please help thanks

  • http://lisarutland.com Lisa Rutland

    Hi CC

From your measurements you’re an hourglass. You’re a perfect example of how body shape is so inexact because it simply doesn’t take into account how we feel about our shapes. You say you have a big bum and yet your stats don’t support you, but that doesn’t matter because that is what you personally focus on. Being an hourglass it’s important to work with your waist to maintain that proportion but other than that try drawing the eye away from what you don’t want people to and minimizing what you want them to avoid. IE wear a plain neutral color (well fitting) on the bottom half and something snazzy on the top to draw eyes away from your butt and to your face.

    Hope that helps.

    Hi,
This has confused me so bad!! I can’t work out my body shape at all, please help me?

    Shoulders – 35
    Waist – 28
    Hips – 34

I mean, that looks to me like I’d be an hourglass, but i’m only a B-cup and I swear my hips and thighs are huge in comparison to the rest of me, so I’ve always thought I was a pear.
    Pleeease help! Thanks =)

  • http://lisarutland.com Lisa Rutland

I’m glad you bought this up – it’s such a great question and perfectly demonstrates the difficulty with defining shape. You’re right, you’d be an hourglass. But if you have more of an issue with your hips and thighs you probably won’t be comfortable unless you feel they’re minimized. And you should do it. At the end of the day the goal is for you to feel comfortable and confident. I discuss it more at this post http://bodyshapestyle.com/2008/04/28/have-a-good-look-at-your-naked-truth/.

Hi have not got a clue what shape I am but can tell you I am alot bigger than the ladies already mentioned! I am only five foot and my shoulders measure 40, my waist 30 and my hips ( thats the widest part right round your bum?) is 42. Please help what shape am i what should I wear and what should I stear clear of! I am 33 and hate my shape!

  • http://lisarutland.com Lisa Rutland

    Hi Claire

From your stats you’re an hourglass and very size to me, though I’m a fair bit taller. You need to concentrate on balance and utilize your waist. It’s easy to end up funky when you’re a buxom hourglass – trust me I know. Because you’re petite it’s important you keep things very simple, so no ruffles or frills, bows or anything extra. Make sure you have a good, supportive bra and make use of your breasts and face. Most important work with your shape. Do not try and cover it up. For me it’s been and still is a hard road to accepting that those killer curves can actually be attractive, but they are.

My best advice is to find something about yourself you love, be it your breasts, your face, your waist or your butt and make it the focus of an outfit.

Hope that helps. Check out the tips for hourglass ladies as well.

    LISA

  • Claire

Thanks Lisa for your advice! Have done some reading on the hourglass figure plus being petite! Have picked up some nice tips! I am at present a size 14 on top..my bra size is a 36 c/d depending on were I buy them. I would be a 14-16 on bottom half. Biggest problem I usually have is dresses. Should I go for straight eg pencil like bottom half or more with a little flare. My sister always says go for something more girly but to tell you the truth I like straight.

    Claire

  • http://lisarutland.com Lisa Rutland

Hey Claire. I have the same problem. It’s really difficult to get a dress that fits the top, bottom and my waist. The best bet is to get the best fit you can and tailor.

Definitely go with what your prefer, simply because you have more of an idea of who you are than your sister. In this case I agree with you that straight is better. Because of the contrast between your waist and your hips an A-line skirt (one that has a little more flare) can look as if it’s flowing from just under your breasts and make your lower half seem huge. When you’re an hourglass you really need to emphasize your waist and you do this by capturing the hips. A straight skirt is better for this. Also look for a godet or trumpet skirt which is fitted around the hips and thighs and then flares out toward the hem. It’s a more feminine version of a straight skirt.

Again though, because you’re petite it’s best to look for simple, uncluttered lines.

    Thanks Claire and good shopping.

  • Shei

    Hi Lisa,

I’m not sure about my shape.. I could see Oval or Rectangle or Pear depending on how you look at it.
I am debateably 5’6″ to 5’8″ depending on which ruler you ask o_o and I’m about 275 lbs. I seem to be rather evenly shaped from shoulders to waist to hips but I can’t tell for sure where I would fit in. I do have a very large rear so I’m guessing maybe I should lean toward Pear but my arms are large, so I kinda don’t know. I have D+ breasts and a waist of about 44 inches that doesn’t seem to want to lose the shape of pregnancy (2 years ago now … geeze). My thighs have the saddlebags problem you mentioned in your article “Look at your naked truth” and I don’t particularly like any single part of my body. I don’t think that I have great legs or anything… I just feel gross.
I think if anything I have nice eyes and … wait, cross out the and.

So I definitely don’t know how to make myself look better, feel better, and thus feel good now while I’m working on changing things. My wardrobe consists of a strange array of thrift-store finds from button down men’s shirts to frilly things that emphasize my bust… I hate all of them. Frankly, I prefer a more androgynist style and don’t like to feel overly girly or frilly. At the same time I’m not trying to look “butch” if you know what I mean… Sporty doesn’t suit because I”m really not… and I hate to be a poser. So I’m a hard case…

I’d just love to look in the mirror and think “I look great…” For once.

My hair is black (dyed but looks better on me than my natural blonde, honestly) and short/punky. I’d like it to flatter my face more but I can’t find a good stylist or a good style.

I like black, blues and grays best when it comes to colors. I have a kinda olive/brown undertone with very fair skin. (Germanic heritage.) So I look better in cool colors. Red looks awful on me and yellow and orange are right out. I prefer muted colors anyway…

I guess what I mean is that I don’t like to look too girly but I want to have some style. I don’t know what to begin to look for in clothing to achieve this…

If you have any advice, I would LOVE to hear it… And if you want to email me, I can send pictures to help explain my appearance.

    Thank you so much!
    Shei

    Thank-you so muchhhhhhhh…..

by this calculation im a Hour Glass… I always thought i was a rectangle.

    Shoulder = 39″
    Waist = 26″
    hips = 39″

Im really happy i found this, as now i dont feel such like a boys shape. :)

    thank-you

im not totally sure on my shape, i have the pear shape in the fact that i have small boobs, big hips and bum… but my shoulders are not narrow they are inline with my hips. I am a uk size 12, weight 10 stone at 5 ft 7, aged 20 and i am having real trouble finding a skirt that doesnt make me look 15 stone and old fashioned!

    my shoulders are roughly: 37″
    my hips: 35″
    and my waist is: 27″

  • http://lisarutland.com Lisa Rutland

    Hi Hannah

You perfectly illustrate the fact that this whole body shape stuff is all just a guideline and sometimes we just don’t fit neatly into any category. I also feel your pain with regards a matronly skirt. I’m personally kinda an hourglass but also kinda a pear, or it least I feel my ass has a life of it’s own independent of what I might want it to be doing.

My rules for skirts are keep the hem length at the knee (showing the curve of the upper calf will instantly make you look taller and leaner) and keep them fitted. I opt for straight or pencil skirts (following the lines of your thighs which is to be avoided if your outer thighs are wide), which I do to emphasize my waist and create a slim profile.

An A-line is great for masking bigger hips and thighs but make sure you’ve got a waist or it will look matronly rather than chic. An A-line from a drapey fabric is a good compromise.

Other than that, keep trying. Try all different types of skirts and remember to wear a top you feel makes your upper half look great when you’re doing it.

I was just wandering what my body shape would be considered… my measurements are..
    shoulder= 40″
    bust= 35″
    waist=261/2-27″
    hips= 36″
It throws me off cause my thighs are not skinny but even if I gain weight my waist stays basically the same… help please??

  • http://lisarutland.com Lisa Rutland

    Hi Kari

I would say you are a triangle (bigger on top) since your shoulders are so wide. However with your bust measurement you’re fairly consistent with a rectangle shape. I have a similar problem. My shoulders are tiny but my bust is huge so on one hand I’m a pear and on the other an hourglass. Your best bet is to look for tips for both shapes and then take what works for you. This whole idea of pigeonholing everyone into a specific shape is not an exact science. It’s meant as a guideline.

    Thanks for commenting,

what does this make me please help

  • http://lisarutland.com Lisa Rutland

You have a great shape but you’re not quite an hourglass, but rather a rectangle. The goal for you is to create or play up that hourglass look.

  • Angela

Ok…this may explain why jackets near fit me. I feel like I giant compared to these other people! I’m 5’9″ and very broad in the shoulders.

Lisa, am i a triangle? Thanks!

    Shoulders: 44
    Bust: 37
    Waist: 32
    Hips:38.5

  • Kari

I goofed up on my measurements. my shoulders are actually only 38″-39″ and my waist is 26″. According to the formula above I am an hourglass. many have said that I had a perfect shape but when its your own body you don’t really feel that way.. this has been a lot of help!! thanks!!

  • http://lisarutland.com Lisa Rutland

@ Angela: You most definitely are a triangle. When choosing a jacket for broad shoulders choose a deep v-neck with small lapels and a dropped or raglan shoulder. Elongate the torso to soften the shoulder with vertical seaming. Keep trying; you can find a jacket that works.

@ Kari: It’s great that you’re an hourglass but funnily enough hourglasses have to be the most vigilant as it’s easy to make yourself look top or bottom heavy. I’m glad you found your shape.

im 39 at the shoulders 29 at the waist and 36 at the hips, what am i?

  • http://lisarutland.com Lisa Rutland

    Hi Keira

You’re a triangle, sometimes called an inverted triangle. Basically you’re bigger on top. It depends on your height how much difference this will make – the taller you are the less emphasis.

  • Priscila

I’m not if I’m an hourglass or pear/spoon. My mom says I’m an hourglass but I’m not sure.
My shoulder is 40, my waist is 29 and my hips is 40. I have to say I’m a bit chubby which interfierces a bit. Although my mom keeps saying its my body shape, which I don’t know what it is. I’m sorry, but can anyone help me out.

  • http://lisarutland.com Lisa Rutland

    Hey Priscila

You are indeed an hourglass which is sometimes a mixed blessing. You have curves, embrace them as they are very unlikely to go away.

For an hourglass it’s important to step up a little with style as the casual styles so common today often can make her look frumpy or chubby. Which doesn’t mean dust off the little black dress to go to the movies but it does mean put a bit more effort in. Aim to be about 10 – 15 % better dressed than your friends. It will suit your shape more.

Also, always remember to emphasize your waist. As I said, it’s important for an hourglass to embrace her curves because working with them is an integral part in getting comfortable and stylish.

  • Kylie

    Hi there,

I’m not sure that I’ve measured my shoulders properly- I’ve ever noticed that they were broad but the measurements I’ve made are:
    Shoulders 42
    Bust 35
    Waist (smallest part) 31
    Hips 40

I’m 24, 5ft 5 and 10 stone. I’ve always considered my hips and thighs to be the largest part of me and was just wondering if you could please offer some advice as to the kind of troucers that would suit me best- I tend to go for baggy boyfit jeans which I don’t think are very attractive alot of the time!
Any tips greatly welcomed! Many thanks, Kylie.

what shape is my body?.here are my body measurements. Shoulders 39 ins,Waist 32.Hips 36,Bust 35 ins.

    Thanks
    brigid

  • http://lisarutland.com Lisa Rutland

@ Kylie – To minimize hips and thighs try a wide leg or straight leg pant or jean with a medium rise. If you need to disguise a tummy go for flat fronted as well. Avoid bootleg cuts if you want to hide your thighs as a bootleg will often highlight the thighs.

@ Marie – You’re a rectangle or bigger in the middle, sometimes referred to as an apple. Empire waisted tops are a great choice (they are banded just below your breasts – your narrowest part).

@ Cynthia – You’re also a rectangle but you’ll have different issues that Marie. Look for clothes that highlight your waist and avoid anything too short – it will make you look like a brick.

@ Brigid – You’re bigger on top or a triangle. Your challenge is to bring balance back into your look. Minimize your shoulders and play up your hips.

Hi, please could you help me identity what body shape I am.

    Shoulders – 40″
    Waist – 32.5″
    Hips – 40.5″

Using the guide above I would say I’m a rectangle. Am I right? Is this an apple shape??

My weight tends to go onto my stomach, not my thighs or hips. I have a smaller top half. When I lose weight it goes from every where else first. My stomach is always last.

    I’d really appreciate your advice.

  • Ornella

    Hi,

I’m not sure if I’m an hourglass or not. My sister says I am but I don’t think so because it just seems like my shoulders/torso completely dominate my hips, especially my arms: I’m a mesomorph as well, but I feel like my torso is completely exaggerated. My measurements are:

    Shoulders: 43 1/2″
    Bust: around 38-40″
    Waist: 30 1/2″
    Hips: 41″

  • T

    My waste is 28
    hips 33
    bust 35

The measurements are really close so I’d say I’m a rectangle but I also have long legs, thick thighs, and a large butt. Would that make me a pear? It looks balanced because I also have broad shoulders and a short/petite frame. I think this is why I get complemented on the figure I don’t have haha. I am very lean. Not sure if working out will balance things out? My sister is a rectangle/model type and we trade our clothes sometimes and they definitely fit us quite differently.

  • Victoria

Please, I dont know what shape i am. my shoulders are 42in, my waist is 33, and my hips are 40. i thought i was a triangle, but i have big thighs and hips. and my shoulders aren’t that noticeable compared to other parts of my body. please help. thanks

  • Priscila

Hi Lisa, thanks for returning my reply, and giving me the tips!
Now that you menchan it, the clothes I buy doesn’t really flatter my body, although I think its really my fault, since I can’t pick the right type of clothes for it. But I’ve also begun to work out everyday to get fit…I think it helps out with the clothes and stuff…I think, haha.
    Anyways, thank you very much!!!

  • http://lisarutland.com Lisa Rutland

One of the key things you need to keep in mind about body shape is that it’s an arbitrary grouping. We all fall broadly within one of four groups but then lake Michigan and the pond down the local park broadly fall into the category lakes.

The key to working with your shape is to define what it is that you personally like and don’t like about your body. Then look for ways to highlight and minimize. For anyone who thinks I don’t fit that particular group – you’re probably right. Check out all the groups as you’ll find things that resonate and even one idea may lead to a great outfit.

  • J

    Shoulders-41″ish
    Bust-39″
Waist-32″ (is this an -exact- area or simply the narrowest part?)
    Hips-41″

I always feel pretty shapeless :( So it’d be nice to have A shape at all :P What do you think? Thanks in advance (if you’re responding anymore :) )

  • http://lisarutland.com Lisa Rutland

You’re a classic hourglass J so I’ve no idea why you feel shapeless.

It’s one of the issues I’ve found with this blog is that just because someone else goes “You have a great shape” doesn’t mitigate how we tend to feel about ourselves.

Part of dressing for your shape is acceptance and finding beauty. Dressing better is as much about feeling better as it is the clothes.

  • Tali

    Hello,
My shoulders are 38″, waist 29″ and hips 39″. So technically that makes me an hourglass I think?

But I’ve always felt my hips are so big compared to the rest of me! I feel massive compared to everyone else! So basically I should just try to accentuate my waist when dressing?
    Thanks :)

  • Nicole

    Hi Lisa,

Thank you so much! I believe I speak for so many women, your blog is amazing!! Everyone struggling like I was should read it. Reading about other woman’s issues and your responses has given me light, I finally got my shape, I’m an hourglass with a little bit of trouble here and there. My activities require a casual/informal look so this explains why I was having so much trouble feeling comfortable and looking pulled together with my cloth.

If you are still responding I would love to get a few tips from you since I can relate to all of your comments. I am 28 yrs old, weigh 140 pounds, 5’3, short torso also high waisted and need casual basics that will help hide my heavy arms, giagiantic saddlebags, and flabby tummy and side rolls, I cannot get rid of them after pregnancy…lol. I love my small waist, broad shoulders, skinny ankles and curvy calves, bum is ok as long as it does not become one with my thighs.

Thanks for your great help to all of us who are looking to dress well and feel better.

  • Frenchie

    Hi.

I’ve just found your blog while searching for informations about body shape because I can’t seem to figure which one I am…

I believe I’m a triangle because my father says I have “broad shoulders that make me look like a man”, but noone agrees with him…

    Anyway… My measurements are :
    38/39 (shoulders) – 37 (bust, a 32D) – 27 (waist) – 37 (hips).

I have a friend who is definitly a pear but still have shoulders that are bigger than her hips… I wonder whether some people can have “two body shape” or not…
